A major break through on the R1 was the beeping, whistling electronic language known as droidspeak. This information-dense vernacular allowed the R1 to communicate efficiently with other droids as well as data networks and would be soon reconized as a hallmark of the R series.

The P2 & R1 were Industrial Automation`s first attempt at creating a new line of consumer-market astromechs. The orginal P2 was an astromech prototype, that was sold exclusively to the Old Republic merchant fleet on a trial basis. The droid was massive, cumbersome, and sluggish, but it did showcase many of the sleek design features that later became part of the astromech lines.

The droid used three wheeled legs, a rotating head dome, and retractable manipulator arms, that folded into the cylindrical armored hull. The P2 had a primitave version of the Intellex Ship-Configuration computer, and this made the P2 able to maintain bulk crusiers, and container vessels, which it used its buzzsaw and laser as repair tools. The droid was clumsy and slow to learn, and could only communicate through its video display screen or computer link.

Most of the capitans were pleased with the P2 dispite all this, but when Industrial Automation planned to release the P2 publically they were slapped with a technology infringement lawsuit. The case was eventually dropped but the legal delays and bad publicity killed the P2 line which forced IA to start fresh. The R1 astromech droid was IA`s fresh start after the P2 insident, but to despite the P2`s problems it was the blueprint for the new line.

The R1 was the evolution of the P2, but IA used the tall, black body shells from the Mark II Reactor Drone series to save on courtroom costs. The reactor drone series body also helped to give the R1 natural shielding against the most intensive radiation. The R1 droid was equipped with an advanced Intellex II computer, and contained a detailed catalog of 500 starship configurations, and also the droid was the first astromech with the ability to calculate navigational coordinates for a single hyperspace jump. Because of there size most R1`s were stationed aboard Capital warships and large frieghters. The array of retreactable tools helped turn them into adequate technicians, but many buyers did complain about the droids` obsstinate personalities and lethargic method of locomotion, which frequently broke down.

A major break through on the R1 was the beeping, whistling electronic language known as droidspeak. This information-dense vernacular allowed the R1 to communicate efficiently with other droids as well as data networks and would be soon reconized as a hallmark of the R series.
